The first round selection is a Shortstop from Florida U, Richie Martin.  He is a true shortstop and will be expected to remain at his position throughout his career.  He offers quick bat speed, but with some noted mechanical issues in his swing.  Perhaps with quality coaching he can bring about a more solid swing and entrench himself at Shortstop in a few years.  The pick was a slight reach for the A's as Martin was expected to slide down to 25, yet the A's picked him at #20.   It is suspected that Dan Kantrovitz, the new assistant GM who was hired away from the Cardinals had a hand in this decision.  With the Cardinals ever existent success, who could argue against his opinion?
